Dear OHS Families,

I hope you are all doing well!

We have few things happening this week before we head into April Break:

Thanks to our wonderful PTA, the Discovery Museum is coming in on Tuesday to do a special program for all grade levels called “Laws of Motion.” We will have three different assemblies throughout the day: K-2 at 9:30 AM; Grades 3-4 at 10:45 AM, and Grade 5 at 12:00 PM.

On Wednesday, we will be doing a new crisis drilin coordination with the Fairfield Police Department. The drill is called “Stop and Think.” It involves the classroom teacher facilitating age-appropriate conversations on possible actions they would take in different crisis situations. Members of the Fairfield Police Department will be on hand to answer any questions if needed.

On Friday we will have a PTA meeting at 9:15 AM in the APR. Ms. Colleen Morello, our Language Arts Specialist, will be providing an overview of our ELA curriculum.

Also, I want to mention that as we approach the spring season, our students in grades 3-5 will soon participate in the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA), Connecticut’s statewide standardized testing. These assessments are an important opportunity for us to measure your child’s progress in key areas such as math and language arts, while also helping us identify areas where we can continue to support their learning. Below you will find the testing schedule. Please note that students will not be testing every day during the date range provided.

Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will be engaged in SBA testing during the following dates:

  • ELA Grades 3 and 5: Tuesday, 4/22 -  Friday, 4/25
  • ELA Grade 4:  Friday, 4/25 -  Tuesday, 4/29
  • MATH Grades 3 and 5:  Wednesday, 4/30 - Wednesday, 5/7
  • MATH grade 4:  Friday, 5/9  -  Friday, 5/16

Mrs. Day will be reaching out with more information throughout the testing process.

Finally, please remember we will have construction happening outside of the upper wing this week, and please update your SDM daily.

Have a terrific week ahead! Take care.

Sean F. Smyth, Principal

PTA Meeting Friday morning

Our next PTA meeting will be held Friday at 9:15am in the APR. We'll hear updates from Mr. Smyth, get the latest info on our spring PTA events, and hear a presentation about the new language arts curriculum that launched this year from Mrs. Morello. We hope to see you there!

Education budget update

Thank you to all who advocated in favor of the education budget to Fairfield's Board of Finance. The Board of Finance voted to restore an additional $1 million funding back to the school budget. Your support made a difference!

The town budget now moves on to the RTM. We still need your continued advocacy as the budget is not final. Email your RTM Representatives and ask them to fund the BoE budget. See more information from Fairfield's PTA Council below.

Any questions? Contact OHS BOE Rep Jean Shurman.

Share your spring holiday recipes

With many spring holidays coming up, such as Eid Al-Fitr, Passover, and Easter, many of us are going to be cooking with our families. The OHS Culture Committee is collecting recipes that we will post on our website.

Share your family recipes with the OHS Culture Committee by Monday, April 7 and feel free to include 1-2 sentences about how this recipe is meaningful to your family.

Any questions? Contact the OHS Culture Committee.

Donate used items to the FPS Green Teams' Spring Resale

Please consider sharing your gently used items with the FPS Green Team! There is a collection box in the OHS lobby collecting donations towards the town-wide Green Team Resale. You can shop the donated items on April 26 from 12-3 at Sherman. Funds raised by the sale will support the Green Teams throughout Fairfield Schools.

Questions? Contact the OHS Green Team.

Absences Around April Break

If your child will be out for additional days around the spring school break, please either enter it into school dismissal manager or email Mrs. Budlowski your child’s name, homeroom and dates so you don’t have to call the absentee line (she then can enter it for you).

Summer Birthdays

If your child celebrates a summer birthday:

  •  From May 1 to May 11, we will announce daily birthdays for the months of May, July, and August (i.e., May 1, July 1 & August 1)
  •  From May 12 to May 31, we will announce daily birthdays for the months of May, June, July, and August

Your child will receive their birthday book on the above day (Saturday and Sunday birthdays are announced on Fridays). You are welcome to come in and bring a special birthday lunch during their 30-minute lunch time, stay, and visit with your child sitting on an assigned birthday table in APR or just drop their special birthday lunch off.

Are You Moving?

If you are planning on moving or changing your address, please email Mrs. Budlowski so she can put your child on her list. Please let her know where you are moving to.

  • If you are moving OUT of the OHS District or Out of Town and your child will NOT be attending OHS this coming school year, a request for record transfer will be sent to you for your completion.
  • Moving to a new address within the OHS district or within the FPS district, you will need to do the following:

If you have a child(ren) enrolled in the Fairfield Public Schools and have moved, to change your address in Infinite Campus, you will need to provide Proof of Residency. You can find the list of documents required here

Thank you to our Parent Social Committee

We had a great Parents' Night Out at Boca Grille last week! Thank you to Eva Elinskas, Diane Fields, Kelly Lane, and Rebecca Solinksy for planning the event. A special shout out to Diane for creating the beautiful flower arrangements!

There will be no Flash next week during Spring Break.

We'll be back with more news on April 21!

Have news to share? Email Jen Braunby 10am Friday
