Dear OHS Families,

I hope everyone had a nice weekend!

We had so many great things happen at OHS last week!

  • The Art Show was wonderful! We included K, 1, 2 for the first time, and they produced some terrific pieces for the show! Thank you to Ms. Grabinski for putting it all together!

  • The 4th and 5th grade concert was phenomenal! I have seen many elementary concerts over the years, and the OHS performances are truly exceptional! Thank you to Ms. Trombley, Ms. DiMeglio, and Ms. Haskitt for creating such wonderful programs!

  • The Bike Bus was a success! Everyone seemed to enjoy riding to school! Thank you to Robert Marshall for organizing the event!

  • My first OHS Walkathon was a blast! We had perfect weather for a walkathon and the children really enjoyed themselves. It is so great that the parents gather along the route and cheer the students on! Thank you to the parent committee of Lindsay Gaines, Francesca Capalbo, and Courtney Cataldo for organizing!

We continue a very busy spring at OHS! Here is a look at the week ahead:

  • Spring Assessments: NWEA assessments start on Monday and continue for the next two weeks. We take these assessments three times a year and they measure student progress over time. They are not as intense as the SBA’s, but they are an important data point for us. If your child has a chromebook, please make sure they come to school charged daily.

  • 5th Grade students and parents host a staff breakfast Monday morning at 8:15 AM.

  • Monday night is STEAM night at SHU from 6:00-7:30 PM for those who are registered to participate.

  • We will have a few high school interns helping out at OHS starting on Wednesday.

  • The 5th Grade field trip to Chelsea Piers is Wednesday.

  • Field Day is scheduled for Thursday, with a rain date of Friday.

Enjoy the week!

Take care,

Sean F. Smyth, Principal

Committee Chair Positions Available!

It's that time of year when we begin building out our PTA Committees for the next school year.  We are looking for volunteers to head up and/or support a wide range of activities for next year. No prior PTA experience is necessary and with so many roles available, there is something to match everyone's interests, skill sets and experience. Sign up on your own or with a friend or two! Please note your interest in the form below by Friday.

Grab your class colors, Thursday is Field Day

Kids will be jumping out of their beds to get to school Thursday with all the fun stuff we've planned for them for Field Day - from inflatables, a sponge relay, sack race... and did we mention inflatables already??

Volunteer to be part of the fun!

You guessed it...we need volunteers to help out at the stations and make sure the kids have the best time! We still have 7 slots available for the afternoon session. If you can’t commit to the entire timeslot, consider signing up and splitting the shift with a friend!

Cick here to sign up

Wear your class colors

Each class has been assigned a color to wear for Field Day activities.  Grab something from your closet or get creative!

Note: we are keeping an eye on the forecast. The rain date is Friday, 5/23.

Food tickets on sale for Family Fun Night

We’ve almost made it to the end of the school year!! Come wind down with us at Family Fun Night - Friday, May 30 from 5:30-8:00pm at OHS. We'll have pizza, ice cream, and fun activities: DJ, tattoos and also kickball & football for kids to stay busy while the grown-ups (hopefully) sit back, relax and hang out with fellow parents. Bring your own chairs / picnic blankets!

Order Your Family Tickets Now!

If you want pizza and ice cream, you MUST order in advance. We cannot accept any payments for food at the event.

  • Family Tickets are $18 = 1 medium cheese pizza + 2 ice creams.
  • Additional pizza = $16
  • Additional ice cream = $2

Deadline to buy tickets (and ensure no one goes hangry) is next Monday, May 26.

Order Food Tickets Here

We're going GREEN - so bring your water bottles!

Tickets are for food only! Top off your bottles at our water coolers or bring your own drinks.

Help us out!

We need volunteers for setting up, the tattoo station, handing out pizzas, and cleaning up. Unlike years past, we'll have kickball and football available on the field and will also need parent volunteers to supervise or host a game or two. Sign up to help and we 100% welcome OHS alumni to volunteer too!

PTA funds in action
  • We have made a donation to the CT Audubon Society in appreciation for their hosting of our field trips.
  • Our PTA budget contains a fund to support OHS families in need, and we had money remaining as we near the end of our fiscal year. In consultation with our school social worker, she suggested some families could benefit from having gift cards to get an outfit for the summer. Thanks to your support of our fundraising throughout the year we were able to provide Old Navy gift cards for these families.
A huge THANKS to all our helpers!

Last week was a busy and memorable one at OHS, and we are so thankful for our Family of Friends who have stepped up to help along the way!

  • Thank you to all who supported our OHS artists at Tuesday's Art Show. Thanks to the volunteers who helped prepare, setup and take down the exhibit, and a special thanks to Art Show chairs Cammie Liberty and Whitney Gagliardi, and to Ms. Grabinski.
  • Thank you to Rob Marshall for organizing our 2nd annual Bike Bus, and to all the parents who joined us to bike to school.
  • Thank you to all who made signs, wrote in chalk, handed out water and cheered on our otters during Friday's WALK-A-THON. We are grateful to everyone who donated to our fundraiser - we raised over $6,000 for the PTA! Thank you to Francesca Capalbo, Lindsay Gaines and Courtney Cataldo for organizing.

We still have a few more events ahead, and we know the end of the year is always a busy time.  We are so grateful for your support!
