Dear Osborn Hill Families,

Happy Memorial Day! I hope you have enjoyed the weekend!

The children had a ball at Field Day this past Friday, and we almost made it through completely dry! The final group got rained on for the last 25 minutes, but it didn’t seem to bother them at all! I want to thank Mr. Marko for leading Field Day. He does a wonderful job keeping the event fun, but also safe for our students! I also want to thank the PTA Coordinators, Michelle Cavanaugh and Morgan Marcinek for organizing the volunteers and helping Mr. Marko manage the day. The three of you were a great team, and you pulled off a wonderful event amidst some challenging conditions.

I also want to thank Brittany Cianciulli, the 5th grade students, and all of their families, for hosting an amazing staff breakfast on Monday. The food was delicious and the service was impeccable! I would definitely recommend the Otter’s Cafe to my friends and family!

Finally, I want to thank Ms. Hanley and our PTA President, Mrs. Miller, as well as our parent volunteers, for making STEAM night a success! The children really enjoyed the robotics and engineering workshops at SHU. I think their favorite part was when the SHU staff went up to the roof of the building to drop their inventions off of the roof to test their engineering skills. I think we definitely have some future engineers at OHS, because our inventors did an amazing job protecting their eggs, despite being dropped from about 35 feet!

We continue a very busy spring at OHS! Here is a look at the week ahead

  • Spring Assessments: Our NWEA assessments continue this week. We are almost done with our Spring assessments!! If your child has a chromebook, please make sure the devices come to school charged every day.

  • We will be conducting our final lockdown drill this week. As in all safety drills, the students’ main job is to stop what they are doing and follow the teacher’s directions.

  • Wednesday, during the 5th grade lunch, the Dean and a School Counselor from FWMS will visit our 5th graders to discuss the transition to middle school.

  • The District Art Show for Fairfield Public Schools Public Reception is Wednesday Night from 5:00-8:00 PM at the Pequot Library.

  • We host high school musicians for a concert on Thursday morning for our 3rd and 5th graders.

  • Friday is a Kindergarten Field Trip to New Pond Farm.

  • Friday is also a Spirit Day, and Friday night is the OHS Family Fun Night from 5:30-8:00 PM.

Have a wonderful week!

Take care,

Sean F. Smyth, Principal

Last call for Family Fun Night food tickets!

We’ve almost made it to the end of the school year!! Come wind down with us at Family Fun Night  this Friday, May 30 from 5:30-8:00pm behind OHS. We'll have pizza, ice cream, and fun activities: DJ, tattoos, and kickball & football for kids to stay busy while the grown-ups (hopefully) sit back, relax and hang out with fellow parents. Bring your own chairs / picnic blankets! The event is rain or shine - we will celebrate indoors if necessary.

Today is your LAST CHANCE to Buy Food Tickets

We will have pizza and ice cream on-site, BUT all food MUST be preordered! There will not be an opportunity to purchase food at the event.

Today is the last day to purchase your food vouchers!

Order Food Tickets Here

We're going GREEN - so bring your water bottles!

Tickets are for food only! Top off your bottles at our water coolers or bring your own drinks.

Volunteer to help us out!

We need volunteers for setting up, the tattoo station, handing out pizzas, and cleaning up. Unlike years past, we'll have kickball and football available on the field and will also need parent volunteers to supervise or host a game or two. Click here to sign up to help - we 100% welcome OHS alumni to volunteer too!

View next year's PTA Budget, up for vote in June

Below you will find a copy of our proposed 2025-2026 PTA budget. As a team, each year, the President, President Elect, Treasurer, and Treasurer Elect prepares this proposed budget, which includes the activities and programs that our OHS PTA undertakes and their respective budgets. (NOTE: Our PTA budget is separate from the town's budget). As we craft our budget, we thoughtfully examine our previous year’s expenses; input from the board and our committee chairs; and fundraising amounts to get an idea of what we will spend or make in the coming year.

Our community had a very successful year of fundraising, events, and programs offered. It is all thanks to the support of you, the parents, along with the teachers, and OHS staff that helped make it all happen! Notably this year, due to successful fundraising from our events including Harvest Faire, Harvest Faire Raffle, the Variety Show and the Sweetheart Dance, we are able to use the surplus funds to purchase a gaga pit for our school playground. We also have plans to purchase some items for the Teacher’s Lounge, amongst other things for our children.

As we crafted the 2025-2026 budget, we reflected on our fundraising this year, and goals for next year. Many of our goals remain the same: to continue to fund amazing programs for our children and community. importance of funding our many programs, while being mindful of keeping our event and ticket prices low for our families. We also aim to prioritize ways in which we can be even more expense-conscious next year, while keeping costs low, so more funds can go back to the community. For all the money raised, we aim to distribute the funds back to the community in ways that will touch as many children as possible. For example, this year, we funded two Author visits (Jerry Palotta who writes the series Who Would Win..; and Chris Grabenstein who writes the Limoncello series); Magic Morgan & Liliana, a deaf magician who focuses on themes of inclusion and accessibility; and science programming from the Sacred Heart University Discovery Science Center, and much more.

In the proposed 2025-2026 budget, one notable shift is that we are trying to put more money back into the Student Activity Fund which predominantly funds field trips. We have received feedback from OHS parents that this is much desired by our community and we want to try to make that happen! To accomodate this shift, we needed to make some small adjustments to our fundraising goals, however, these updated targets are still significantly less than what the committees raised this year, so we believe these goals are attainable.

So please review this budget, there’s lots of great things on the horizon! We hope to see you on Thursday, June 5th at 9:15am to celebrate the end of the year and cast your vote.
